When mixing, I often find myself automating vocal EQs over the course of playback, especially in the midrange. One particular example is the song "Background Actor" by Sabrina Song. Because the Ex Machinas' midrange is so accurate, I rely on them heavily for this and other similar tasks. A vocal isn't right until it sounds right on the Ex Machinas!
Daniel Neiman
Daniel Neiman grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, teaching himself to play whatever instrument he could get his hands on before heading to New York to study at NYU's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, where he learned from mentors like Jim Anderson, Kevin Killen, Bob Power, and Nick Sansano. He has since built a full-service mixing practice in New York, moving fluidly between independent artists and major-label acts, with credits that include Yeasayer, Aidan Bissett, min.a, and Meg Smith. He speaks openly about the craft itself, describing how he once played it safe on rough mixes out of fear of overstepping an artist's vision, and how he has since learned to trust his own instincts and commit to bolder passes when a song calls for it. Among the work he is proudest of is his mix of Sabrina Song's 'Thaw,' which he has called simply a great song, and a run of tracks for the artist min.a whose production he loves. Neiman also shares mix breakdowns and studio insight through his own blog, walking listeners through his approach on songs like 'Strawberry' by Sabrina Song and 'BUTTERFLY' by Kendall Raesunnie.
